Answering Three Mormon Purpose of Life Questions

Every person wrestles with the big questions of life: Why am I here? What is the purpose of life? What happens after death? Mormonism and Christianity offer very different answers. In this training, Christy Darlington contrasts the LDS view of life with the biblical view, showing how only the Word of God gives true hope and eternal purpose.

The Mormon View of Life

According to LDS teaching, the purpose of life includes:

  1. Gaining a physical body in order to progress toward godhood.
  2. Being tested through obedience to commandments and ordinances.
  3. Forming eternal families through temple marriage and sealing.
  4. Proving worthiness to return to Heavenly Father’s presence.
  5. Eternal progression with the ultimate goal of becoming exalted gods and goddesses.

The Biblical View of Life

The Bible gives a very different picture:

  1. Life is a gift, not a test of worthiness.
  • “The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth… gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.” (Acts 17:24–25)
  • “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” (James 1:17)
  1. Our purpose is to glorify God — not to become gods.
  • “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
  • “I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God.” (Isaiah 45:5)
  1. Eternal life is not earned by works or ordinances, but given freely through faith in Christ.
  • “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)
  • “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
  1. The family points us to Christ, but our ultimate identity is in Him — not in earthly sealing ordinances.
  • “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:50)
  • “To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)
  1. True rest is found in Christ, not in striving for exaltation.
  • “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
  • “It is finished.” (John 19:30)

The Contrast

While Mormonism burdens people with a lifelong quest for worthiness and eventual exaltation, the Bible gives freedom and peace: our purpose is to know God, glorify Him, and enjoy Him forever (John 17:3). We are not called to become gods, but to worship and serve the one true God for eternity.
