Book of Mormon vs. Mormon Doctrine: What Did Jesus Really Teach?

Joseph Smith claimed the Book of Mormon is “the most correct of any book on earth.” Yet many central teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — such as eternal marriage, the existence of multiple gods, baptism for the dead, and the three degrees of glory — cannot be found anywhere in the Book of Mormon itself.

In fact, the Book of Mormon includes Jesus’ own warning in 3 Nephi 11:39-40: “For my doctrine shall be the same … and if they shall do these things they shall always rejoice, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And in nothing doth man offend God, or against his commandments … or addeth thereto, or taketh away from it.” Christ clearly forbids altering or expanding His doctrine.

The Bible confirms this principle as well. Revelation 22:18–19 warns against adding to or taking away from God’s Word: “If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book … and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life.” Likewise, Galatians 1:8 emphasizes that anyone preaching a gospel contrary to Christ’s teaching is accursed: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

This video explores the tension between LDS doctrines and the Book of Mormon’s own words, questioning how Mormonism can justify doctrines that Christ explicitly forbids. It asks viewers to consider the difference between the fullness of the gospel as revealed by Jesus and the additional teachings added by Joseph Smith.
