Evangelizing Mormons – Witnessing Techniques, part 3

One of the most effective ways to reach members of the LDS Church is to use their own scriptures as a starting point, especially the Book of Mormon. Interestingly, the Book of Mormon often contradicts later Mormon doctrines and aligns more closely with biblical truth. By gently pointing out these differences, Christians can open the door for Mormons to see that their foundation rests on shifting sand, not on the unchanging Word of God (Matthew 7:24–27).

For example, the Book of Mormon teaches:

  • There is only one God: “Christ the Lord God Omnipotent” (Mosiah 3:5; Alma 11:26–29), while later LDS doctrine teaches that God the Father was once a man who became exalted. Yet the Bible declares clearly: “Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Isaiah 43:10).
  • Salvation is through the grace of Christ alone: “There is no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come… only in and through the name of Christ” (Mosiah 3:17). This echoes Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

When Mormons see these contradictions between their earliest scripture and their modern teachings, it forces them to wrestle with the question: Which foundation is true — the changing doctrines of men or the unchanging truth of God’s Word (Isaiah 40:8)?

This same approach applies to other religions and cults as well. By asking penetrating questions, you can expose faulty foundations and point people back to the true cornerstone, Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11).

Marshall’s tract, “Uncloaking Questions – Discernment and the Cults,” provides a practical tool with carefully designed questions that help uncover contradictions and inconsistencies in false religions. These questions work much like Jesus’ questions to the Pharisees, which exposed their wrong assumptions and revealed their faulty understanding (Matthew 22:41–46).

As Christians, our responsibility is not simply to prove others wrong, but to lovingly lead them to the truth. Paul reminded Timothy: “The servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves” (2 Timothy 2:24–25).

Through the use of the Book of Mormon, strategic questions, and the clear truth of the Bible, this method demonstrates how to help Mormons — and others trapped in false systems — see that only Jesus Christ is the sure foundation for salvation (John 14:6).
