God Was Never a Man: Refuting Mormon Claims of Exaltation

Mormon leaders have long taught that God was once a man and that humans can progress to become gods themselves. Joseph Smith famously declared, “As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may be.” LDS President Spencer W. Kimball even envisioned a future where hundreds of thousands of Mormon men could become gods and create their own worlds. But does this align with the truth of Scripture?

The Bible repeatedly emphasizes that God is eternal, uncreated, and wholly unique:

  • “Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any” (Isaiah 44:8).
  • “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent” (Numbers 23:19).
  • “I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee” (Hosea 11:9).

Scripture makes it clear that salvation, blessing, and eternal life are gifts from God, not something humans earn to become divine: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). The idea that humans can one day become gods diminishes the holiness, majesty, and uniqueness of the one true God.

In this video, we examine the stark contrast between Mormon theology and the eternal, unchanging nature of God as revealed in the Bible. By comparing human speculation with divine revelation, viewers will see why the glory and authority of God cannot be replicated or surpassed by any mortal being.

“Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Isaiah 43:10). True worship calls us to acknowledge God’s sovereignty and trust in Christ alone, not to pursue godhood for ourselves.
