Gospel of Grace vs. Mormon Works: Why Salvation Cannot Be Earned

Many people assume that when Mormons speak of “the gospel,” they are referring to the same good news proclaimed in the Bible. But is that actually true? The teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ significantly from the biblical gospel.

The Bible clearly declares that salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, received through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). Jesus Himself declared on the cross, “It is finished” (John 19:30)—signifying the completion of the work needed for humanity’s redemption.

Mormonism, however, layers human requirements onto salvation. Temple ordinances, priesthood authority, eternal marriage, and personal striving for worthiness are presented as essential for eternal life. Scripture warns that adding to Christ’s work undermines the sufficiency of the gospel: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ” (Galatians 1:6–7).

The Bible repeatedly emphasizes that Christ’s sacrifice is complete and sufficient:

  • “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel … how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:1–4)
  • “By one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14)
  • “Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Salvation is entirely by grace through faith, not by human effort or adherence to religious ordinances. Any teaching that adds human works to Christ’s finished work falls short of the truth and risks leading people away from the sufficiency of God’s promise.

This video examines whether Mormonism’s version of the gospel aligns with Scripture, contrasts it with the biblical message of grace alone, and reminds viewers of the good news: salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone (Romans 3:28; John 3:16).
