If the Truth Doesn’t Change, Why Does Mormon History Keep Evolving?

For generations, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints presented a polished, carefully controlled version of its history. But in recent years, under mounting pressure from historical evidence and public scrutiny, the narrative has changed dramatically.

Joseph Smith’s secret plural and polyandrous marriages—once denied—are now acknowledged, even though they contradict both Mormon scripture and God’s moral standard of marriage (Genesis 2:24; 1 Timothy 3:2). The familiar image of Smith translating the Book of Mormon directly from golden plates has shifted to admissions that he used a common “seer stone” placed in a hat—something never practiced by biblical prophets. The Book of Abraham, long claimed to be a divine translation of ancient papyri, has been proven by scholars (and admitted by the LDS Church) to be ordinary Egyptian funerary texts. Even Brigham Young’s racist doctrines—once taught as eternal truth—have now been disavowed.

What emerges is a consistent pattern: the LDS Church has repeatedly altered its story, not because of divine revelation, but because historical facts left no choice. The Bible warns us of such instability: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). God’s truth does not shift with time or culture. By contrast, Mormon history shows a faith built on evolving man-made claims.

Scripture reminds us:

  • “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save” (Psalm 146:3).
  • “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17).
  • “The word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Peter 1:25).

True faith is not found in a church that must constantly rewrite its past, but in the unchanging gospel of Jesus Christ. His Word stands forever (Isaiah 40:8), and His salvation is complete and sufficient (John 19:30).

This video examines the shifting foundation of Mormonism and contrasts it with the firm, eternal truth of God’s Word.
