Jesus and Lucifer: Brothers or Creator and Creation?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that Jesus and Lucifer (Satan) are spirit brothers—two sons of God with competing plans for humanity’s salvation. But does Scripture support this idea?

The Bible presents a very different reality. Jesus is not one of many created beings—He is the eternal Creator of all things. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible … all things were created by him, and for him” (Colossians 1:16–17). “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3). Even the angels, including Lucifer, were created by Christ, not co-eternal siblings.

Lucifer, the proud angel who rebelled, is a created being and not Jesus’ brother. Scripture describes his fall: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! … For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven … I will be like the most High” (Isaiah 14:12–14). “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom … I will cast thee to the ground” (Ezekiel 28:17). Jesus’ authority as Redeemer was never in question, and Satan’s rebellion demonstrates the clear Creator/creature distinction.

The Bible further confirms Jesus’ full divinity:

  • “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
  • “For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9).
  • “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last” (Revelation 22:13).

The notion that Jesus and Satan were spirit siblings diminishes the majesty, authority, and uniqueness of Christ. The Bible makes it clear: Christ is eternal, sovereign, and worthy of all worship (Philippians 2:9–11). Satan is a created adversary whose power is limited and ultimately defeated (Revelation 20:10).
