One of the most distinctive teachings in Mormon theology is the claim that Jesus and Satan were once spirit brothers who both sought the role of Savior—a belief tied to Book of Abraham, chapter 3. According to LDS teaching, God chose Jesus’ plan and rejected Lucifer’s, leading to Satan’s rebellion. But is this claim consistent with what the Bible teaches?
Scripture paints an entirely different picture. Jesus is not a created spirit being; He is the eternal Son of God, the second Person of the Trinity. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). This includes Lucifer himself. Far from being brothers, Jesus is the Creator, and Satan is a created being who rebelled against his Maker.
The Bible consistently affirms Christ’s supremacy:
- “By him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth … all things were created by him, and for him. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16–17).
- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
- “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8).
Satan, by contrast, is a fallen angel. The Bible describes his prideful rebellion: “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! … For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven … I will be like the most High” (Isaiah 14:12–14). Jesus Himself testified, “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven” (Luke 10:18).
The role of Redeemer was never “up for debate” between Christ and Satan. From eternity past, Jesus was chosen as Savior: “[He] verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you” (1 Peter 1:20). His mission was not one option among many, but the fulfillment of God’s perfect plan: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
This video contrasts the LDS teaching of Jesus and Lucifer as rival “spirit brothers” with the clear testimony of Scripture. The truth is this: Christ’s authority has never been challenged. He is not a contender—He is the eternal, sovereign Creator, the victorious Redeemer, and the only name by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
