Joseph Smith’s Real Successor? What the Legal Records Reveal

Is the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints truly the continuation of Joseph Smith’s original church, or a break-off?

While the LDS Church claims to inherit Smith’s authority, history and legal records paint a more complex picture. The Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) holds many of the original properties, documents, and sacred items once belonging to Joseph Smith. Who legally and spiritually inherited his estate—Brigham Young’s followers in Utah, or those who remained loyal to Smith’s lineage?

From a Christian perspective, true church authority is not just about earthly property or titles, but alignment with God’s Word. Jesus said, “By their fruits you will know them” (Matthew 7:16–17), emphasizing that obedience to Christ, not claims of succession, defines the true church. Scripture also warns against following leaders who deviate from God’s commands: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15). The Bible teaches that God preserves His church according to His will, not human scheming or legal disputes (Acts 20:28).

In this video, we trace Joseph Smith’s estate and examine the legal and historical trail. Does it support the Utah LDS Church’s claim, or suggest that another branch aligns more closely with the principles Christ established? Christians are challenged to consider both historical evidence and biblical truth when evaluating church authority.
