Satan’s Lies and God’s Image: A Biblical Response to Mormon Beliefs

Mormons teach that humans are “gods in embryo,” claiming that mankind was created to progress into godhood. This belief is often tied to Genesis 1:26–27, where God created man in His image, and to Satan’s lie to Eve in the garden: “ye shall be as gods” (Genesis 3:5). But Scripture shows that this doctrine is built on deception, not divine truth. Jesus identified Satan as “a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44). Why would Christians trust the very promise that originated from the deceiver himself?

The Bible also makes it clear that God does not tempt His people to sin: “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man” (James 1:13). The serpent’s offer was not a path to divinity but a lure into disobedience, which brought sin and death into the world (Romans 5:12).

When Scripture speaks of humanity being created in God’s image, it points not to a physical body or potential for godhood, but to a spiritual and moral likeness. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him” (Genesis 1:27). This likeness was marred by sin but is restored in Christ: “And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him” (Colossians 3:10). The image of God is about spiritual renewal and holiness—not exaltation to deity.

Furthermore, God Himself declares the uniqueness of His divinity: “Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Isaiah 43:10). The desire to become gods echoes the pride of Satan, who sought to exalt himself above God and was cast down (Isaiah 14:12–15). The true calling of humanity is not to ascend to godhood, but to glorify and serve the one eternal God (Psalm 90:2).

This video offers a clear biblical refutation of the Mormon teaching of men becoming gods. By examining Genesis, Colossians, Isaiah, and other passages, we expose this doctrine as a recycling of the serpent’s original lie and highlight the truth of the gospel: salvation and transformation through Christ alone, not exaltation to godhood. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
