The False Promise of Becoming Gods: A Biblical Response to Mormon Exaltation

Mormonism teaches the doctrine of exaltation — the belief that humans can eventually become gods. According to LDS theology, every person is a “God in embryo,” progressing through obedience, temple ordinances, and spiritual growth toward eventual divinity. But where does this idea originate, and how does it align with Scripture?

This concept echoes the temptation in the Garden of Eden, where Satan told Eve she could “be like God” (Genesis 3:5). From that moment, the desire to attain godhood apart from God has been a recurring deception. The Bible makes it clear that God alone is eternal, uncreated, and unique:

  • “For I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:9)
  • “Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me” (Isaiah 43:10)
  • “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me” (Deuteronomy 4:35)

Humans, though made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26–27), are finite, created beings. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the unbridgeable distinction between Creator and creation:

  • “Who are you, O man, that you answer back to God?” (Romans 9:20)
  • “The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens” (Psalm 113:4)

The New Testament calls believers to worship God and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, not to seek personal divinity:

  • “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5)
  • “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6)

The LDS teaching of humans becoming gods undermines the holiness, greatness, and uniqueness of God. It shifts the focus from Christ’s finished work and God’s glory to human achievement—a temptation the Bible repeatedly warns against (Colossians 1:16–17; Isaiah 14:12–15).

This video examines the origins of the Mormon doctrine of exaltation and contrasts it with the clear truth of Scripture. Discover why God alone is eternal, humans are His creation, and our true calling is to worship Him and place our faith in Jesus Christ for salvation.
