What Happens When You Add to God’s Word? Revelation 22:18 and Mormonism

The Bible contains a solemn warning for anyone who tries to add to God’s Word: “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book” (Revelation 22:18). Yet Mormonism introduces entire additional volumes of scripture—the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price—claiming they are on par with or clarify the Bible.

Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that God’s Word is complete and sufficient:

  • “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him” (Proverbs 30:5).
  • “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
  • “The word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Peter 1:25).

Adding human writings to Scripture, claiming divine authority, risks obscuring the gospel of Jesus Christ and replacing faith in His finished work with reliance on man-made rules and revelations. The Bible warns that Christ’s work is sufficient and complete: “It is finished” (John 19:30), and nothing can supplement or improve what God has already revealed.

In this video, we explore how LDS teachings conflict with these biblical truths and why Scripture must remain the ultimate authority. We also invite you to watch the full, powerful testimony of Carma Naylor in A Mormon’s Unexpectant Journey at WitforJesus – Witnesses for Jesus Inc., where she shares how God’s Word opened her eyes and led her out of Mormonism into the truth of the gospel.

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17). The message is clear: God’s Word alone is sufficient for salvation, instruction, and life.
