Witnessing at a Mormon Temple Outreach

Outreach events near Mormon temples can sometimes be unpredictable. Emotions run high, and bold statements — whether through words or clothing — often spark strong reactions. During the Portland Mormon Temple opening in 1989, Marshall attended wearing a hat with the words “Just Say No” as a lighthearted way to express his conviction. But behind the humor was a serious reminder: Christians are called to prepare themselves to share the truth of the gospel with gentleness and respect.

The apostle Paul urged believers: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15, KJV). Solid preparation in Scripture is not optional, it is essential. When we encounter those caught in deception, we must be equipped to answer with God’s truth, not our own opinions.

Peter echoed this command when he wrote, “But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15, ESV). Effective outreach requires both courage and compassion. While we boldly declare the exclusivity of Christ — “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6) — we must also reflect the character of Christ, who reached out in love even to those who opposed Him.

Temple openings draw large crowds and create unique opportunities for gospel conversations. But Scripture reminds us that outreach is not merely about clever words, bold clothing, or attention-grabbing tactics — it is about faithfully proclaiming Christ. As Paul wrote, “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2, KJV).

The lesson from Marshall’s experience is clear: prepare diligently in God’s Word, approach others with both conviction and kindness, and trust the Lord to use even small moments to plant seeds of truth in hearts that desperately need the gospel.
